Why vip account don’t have the new features? Is it only for non vip account? Still a good app for learning.

Overall great app however if you want to report creepers who make uncomfortable comments on your posts, good luck. The app makes it hard to report creepers. So beware!

Did you know that I can freeze your account as another HelloTalk user? I can be be offended by your post and click one button to freeze your account for a day (or until HelloTalk investigates). You could be posting passages in a language that I’m not native in and I could misunderstand the message and click to have you banned. This happened to me twice. The first time I was posting paragraphs to my account so that I could hear the pronunciation of the learners. One person didn’t understand the English and thought that I was making assumptions about his culture...so he banned me from HelloTalk. Yeah, a mere user has the power to do such a thing. The second time came exactly 24 hours later when people were upset by a post that I made requesting to hear them pronounce something. They didn’t like the content that I wanted them to pronounce. And they had me banned again. And the second time comes with more severe restrictions. By the way, HelloTalk released the first ban without saying anything. They won’t communicate with you or apologize or say anything for that matter. One day I was magically able to use the app again. And when you try to contact them they only want you to text or email them and the correspondence is slow and they send one brief message apologizing and ignoring the the things you wanted to talk about. The people who respond to your grievance seem to be outsourced to China as I could see Chinese characters in the email, bad English writing by the email responder, and a misunderstanding of the text I wrote them. It’s frustrating to say the least. I’m currently waiting to hear back from HelloTalk, but as I wait I’m completely locked out. I don’t have confidence that this is going to be resolved. And worse, I gave them money for the offer to make me a VIP member. I hope that they refund my money but I have a feeling they aren’t going to make it easy on me. By the way, the content that I posted on my profile was a news article stating facts about a prison that was broken into by ISIS in Afghanistan. They said they didn’t want to see politics, but if you read the paragraph I copied it only states an event that happened with no subjective analysis about the topic. It was pure factual. But the point is that your freedom of speech on this app is more limited than the explicit (sex, abuse, harassment, etc.). You can be merely misunderstood by people who are weak in their target language and assume things about you and what you “wrote”. And then they can get you kicked off the app without the approval of HelloTalk. How is this fair?

I don’t usually write reviews but this app has its pros and cons, it’s good for making friends and learning languages, but everyday my messages get deleted, it’s happened 5 times in a row
  • best app for language learning!!

Amazing app! I was looking for a pen pal to learn Spanish, but it was difficult because the websites were either outdated or involved a subscription service. I love how this app allows you to easily connect with other people. I also thoroughly appreciate the interface because it makes it so easy to communicate with others, contrary to other websites for language learning.
  • Too many trying to use as dating app

I was hesitant to sign up. You have to upload a picture and say where you’re from and your gender on the profile. I gave it a shot and unfortunately there’s just too many creeps on this app. It made me feel uncomfortable and gross. It’s a shame since I’m trying to learn how to be conversational in the language I’m learning. Other ladies beware.
